When it comes to shared web hosting options, we have plenty of solutions. For me, what matters is the quality of hosting. Usually, a shared hosting is good enough to handle a considerable amount of a website load with an average traffic of 12-20K/day.
Along with the quality of hardware, the other important parameter on which you should judge the quality of hosting is by the tech support offered by the particular hosting company. Recently at Affiliate Summit 2016 in Las Vegas, I got to know about Inmotion Hosting & I thought of trying them out.
This blog is an unofficial blog on WordPress & Inmotion hosting where I will be sharing tutorials, guides, my experience (Good & bad) with them. If you are already an Inmotion hosting user or planning to become one, do join this unofficial community of Inmotion hosting users & share your experience & journey with them.
This is the first article in the series of Getting Started with Inmotion Hosting & WordPress. In this guide, you will learn how to buy web hosting from InMotion Hosting & things you can ignore to save money while you purchase hosting.
Beginner guide to buying hosting & free domain from Inmotion hosting:
One of the thing which I liked about Inmotion Hosting is SSD & free domain feature. SSD hosting ensures your website performs faster & according to stats, your website operates 2x faster with Sold state drive in comparison with a normal HDD.
Here is a chart which will give you an idea on what performance difference you can expect with Solid state drive over hard disk drive.
They also offer a free domain with hosting purchase, or you can transfer your existing domain & renew it for free. In my case, I utilized their free domain feature by buying a new domain. This is saving of about $14 for the first year.
Let’s move ahead & I will show you how to buy a hosting package from Inmotion Hosting. InMotion hosting offers 3 shared hosting plans & Power plan is the most popular one as it let you host up to 6 websites. You should pick their plan based on a number of websites you want to host. If you are hosting a business or e-commerce website, I recommend you to grab Pro plan which would give you pro-level support.
In below chart you can see all the three shared hosting plans offered by them:
In my case, I have selected the power plan as I will be hosting few of my new WordPress blogs in coming days. I also purchased the hosting for 36 months term, as it helped me save a lot of money in the longer run. Do remember, you will be getting a discount only on your first hosting bill, if you buy hosting for 12 months, then you have to pay the regular hosting fees for renewal.
Tip: So do yourself a favor, and purchase hosting for 24-36 months term to save maximum on your hosting bill. (Money saving tip)
Select the hosting package which you want to buy. In my case, I have selected Power package for 36 months.
In the next step, you can either grab your free domain, or you can use any of your existing domain. If you want to utilize your free domain credit later, you can do that so. In my case, I have entered the domain which I wanted to buy & got it for free with this purchase.
If you wish to use your existing domain purchased from some other place such as ShoutMydomain or Godaddy, you can select the option which says “I already own this domain or will handle the registration separately.” & enter your domain name.
Review your order:
In the next step review the order & if everything looks ok, click on next.
Final Step: Make payment & activate your hosting
This is the final step where you need to fill out your contact details & make payment to get started with your new hosting account. Just to make it easy for you, here are few things you might want to know of:
Max Speed Zone:
Inmotion Hosting is a U.S. based hosting & depending upon your location you can select west or easy zone. Though I would suggest ignore it if you are not sure. This is important only when you are buying hosting for hyper-local business & SEO significance of this is pretty low.
In case if you are a technical guy like me, below image shows the difference between east & west zone. (Would make more sense if you are from U.S.A.)
Inmotion Hosting offers domain privacy feature for $9.99/year which is little too much. In my case, I skipped adding who.is guard. If you are a legit business, you can run without having a who.is guard. (Who.is guard hides your contact information from public & useful when you are working from home or don’t want to disclose your identity).
Another cool feature of Inmotionhosting is auto-installed WordPress, Joomla, Prestashop & few others. For now, I will skip this option & in the next tutorial I will show how you can install WordPress blog on Inmotion hosting from their hosting dashboard. (It’s easy)
They offer multiple payment options including Purchase order or check. You can use your credit or debit card to make a payment which is usually my preferred payment option. If you are buying hosting using check or money order, you can send money to this address:
InMotion Hosting, Inc.
6100 Center Drive
Los Angeles, CA 90045
Their Support number:
PH: 888-321-HOST (4678)
Within next 5 minutes of making the payment, you will get an email (as shown in below screenshot) & click on set your password here to get started.
For me, it took no more than 5 minutes to purchase hosting & free domain from them. In upcoming guides, I will share things you can do with your Inmotionhosting account & how to use it even if you are not so technical.
For now, I would love to know your view on this tutorial. For how long are you using InmotionHosting or are you planning to become their customer?
